Scope: Structural & Geotechnical Design
Client: Rheiner & Villinger Bauingenieure GmbH
Structural and geotechnical design of a composite steel-timber-concrete building in Etzgen, Switzerland. Particular challenges appeared due to the highly irregular stiffness distribution of the building both in plan and in elevation. The project is located at a moderately steep slope with poor soil conditions forcing the concrete wall on the back of the building to additionally work as a retaining structure for the permanent excavation. The structural and geotechnical earthquake engineering interaction proved to be particularly demanding during the development of a sound and feasible static system.
